Rama temples
Every Rama temple in the directory, grouped by state.
A guide is written where we have one, and the temple is named where we do not. Bookable pujas appear where we have verified pandits in the temple's city.
Ayodhya is the birthplace and the centre, and the Ram Janmabhoomi temple there opened in 2024 after a dispute carried through the courts for decades. Kanak Bhawan and Hanuman Garhi are the older shrines in the town.
Rameswaram is a Rama temple by association rather than dedication: the linga there is said to have been installed by Rama himself before crossing to Lanka, which makes it both a Jyotirlinga and part of the Char Dham. Bhadrachalam in Telangana, on the Godavari, is the largest Rama temple of the south.
Rama is almost never enshrined alone. The standard group is Rama with Sita on his left, Lakshmana behind, and Hanuman kneeling at their feet — four figures treated as one object of worship, and a temple to Sita by herself is rare enough to be remarked on.
The exile is mapped as carefully as the birthplace. Chitrakoot on the Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh border marks the first years of it, Panchavati at Nashik the place Sita was taken from, and the Ram Van Gaman Path strings the sites together as a route rather than a set of destinations. Sita Samahit Sthal near Sitamarhi in Bihar marks where she is said to have returned to the earth, and is one of the few shrines in the country dedicated to her alone.
Rama Navami is the day these temples are built around. The reading finishes at noon, the hour of the birth, and at Ayodhya and Bhadrachalam the crowd is large enough that the darshan queue is managed in slots — which is the closest thing the tradition has to a booking, and it is not one.
