About Bade Hanuman Mandir
Bade Hanuman Mandir at Daraganj, near the Sangam, is the temple of the reclining Hanuman — the image lies rather than stands, and it is set below ground level rather than on a plinth. There is no other well-known Hanuman shrine of that form in north India.
The Ganga reaches the sanctum during the flood each year, and the tradition of the place treats the submersion as the river's own darshan rather than as damage. The temple is one of the fixed points of the Magh Mela and the Kumbh, both of which are held on the sands immediately outside it.
The sanctum is below ground and is reached down a flight of steps, so the darshan is looked down on rather than up at. Through the flood weeks the temple closes and the site is under water; the Magh Mela months at the other end of the year are when it is busiest.
