About Thakurbari Temple
Thakurbari is the main Hindu temple in Gangtok, on the Palzor Stadium road, built in 1935 on land given by the Chogyal of Sikkim for the Nepali and Marwari residents of the town. Its founding is therefore a matter of record rather than of tradition.
The complex holds shrines to several deities rather than one, which is what a temple serving a mixed community in a small town tends to become. It is where Gangtok keeps Durga Puja, Ram Navami, Janmashtami and Diwali, and where most of the city's domestic rites are arranged.
The temple is in the middle of Gangtok, a few minutes' walk from MG Marg, and is the one place in the town where a household rite can be arranged without travelling. Its calendar is published on the noticeboard at the gate, which is how most of the city plans around it.
