About Baba Garibnath Temple
Baba Garibnath is Muzaffarpur's principal Shiva temple, and the tradition attached to it is that the linga emerged when a peepal tree on the site was felled. The temple grew from that shrine and now dominates the lane it stands in.
It is the terminus of a kanwar route of its own: water carried from Pahleja Ghat on the Ganga is offered here through Shravan, and the town's Mondays in that month are organised around the queue. Mahashivratri is the other day the temple stays open through.
The temple is in the middle of Muzaffarpur's old commercial area and the lane to it is walked rather than driven. Through Shravan the whole approach becomes a single queue, and local families move their own bookings to the following month.
