Where the tradition disagrees

Vaidyanath वैद्यनाथ

Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, and Parli Vaijnath in Beed, Maharashtra, both identify as the ninth Jyotirlinga. The Shiva Purana names Vaidyanath in Chitabhumi; both sites read that name onto their own geography, and both have unbroken worship traditions.

Nageshwar नागेश्वर

Three temples carry the claim: Nageshwar near Dwarka in Gujarat, Aundha Nagnath in Hingoli, Maharashtra, and Jageshwar in Almora, Uttarakhand. The Dwarka identification is the most widely followed; the Almora one rests on reading "Daruk-vana" as the deodar forests of Kumaon.

Grishneshwar घृष्णेश्वर

Grishneshwar at Verul near the Ellora caves is the accepted twelfth for most pilgrims. Ghushmeshwar at Shivad in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, holds the same name in a variant form and the same claim.

Frequently asked questions

How many Jyotirlingas are there?

Twelve, as named in the Shiva Purana’s Dwadash Jyotirlinga stotra. Fifteen temples are listed here because three of the twelve have more than one claimant.

Which one should we visit first?

Pilgrims usually begin with the one nearest home. From Bihar, Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar is the closest — about 280 km from Patna.

Can you arrange a puja at a Jyotirlinga temple?

Only where the temple has an agreement with us. Elsewhere we can arrange a verified pandit for a Rudrabhishek at your home or a nearby venue.

Is the disputed list a modern argument?

No. The identifications diverge in the Puranic commentaries themselves, and each site has centuries of continuous worship behind its reading.
