About Pahari Mandir
Pahari Mandir sits on Ranchi Hill, about three hundred steps above the city, and the shrine at the top is to Shiva. The hill was known locally as Tiringburu before the temple gave it its present name.
It is also a place of national observance in a way few temples are: the tricolour is raised at the summit on Independence Day and Republic Day, a practice that began after 1947 in memory of freedom fighters hanged on the hill under colonial rule. Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri are the days the steps are full.
The three hundred steps are the whole visit, and there is no alternative route to the top. Elderly members of a family generally wait at the base, so households often keep the rite itself at home and treat the climb as a separate errand.
