About Baidyanath Dham
Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and, in this tradition's reckoning, also a Shakti Peetha — a pairing claimed at few other sites. The temple complex holds twenty-one shrines around the main one, and the linga is worshipped by direct jalabhishek rather than through a priest alone.
In Shravan the town receives kanwariyas who have walked about a hundred kilometres from the Ganga at Sultanganj carrying water on a shoulder-pole, and the queue runs day and night for the whole month. Outside that season the temple keeps an ordinary daily programme and the monthly Shivratri.
Outside Shravan a darshan takes minutes; inside it, the queue is measured in hours and is managed through a routed line. Families planning a rite around a visit choose the months either side of the season for that reason alone.
