What the calendar is doing in January
January spans Paush and the start of Magha, and it opens inside Kharmas — the period when the sun stands in Sagittarius and the tradition holds new beginnings back. Weddings, griha pravesh and other rites of commencement are not kept in it.
It ends on Makar Sankranti, when the sun enters Capricorn and Uttarayan begins. That transit is the reason the festival is fixed to roughly the fourteenth every year while everything else moves, and it is also the point at which the season reopens: the second half of the month carries dates the first half cannot.
For a family fixing a date, the shape of January is simple: nothing of commencement before Makar Sankranti, and a short, heavily booked stretch after it. The pandits who serve a city are working from the same calendar as everyone else, so the second half of the month fills quickly.
Uttarayan, the sun's northward half of the year, runs from Makar Sankranti to the middle of July, and the tradition treats it as the more auspicious of the two halves for beginnings.
