What the calendar is doing in July
July falls inside Chaturmas, the four months from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Devutthana Ekadashi in Kartika, during which the tradition holds new beginnings — weddings, griha pravesh, the start of a venture — in abeyance. The month carries observances rather than commencements.
Shravan usually begins in July and is the Shaiva month: its Mondays are kept as fasts, the kanwar pilgrimage walks to Baidyanath and to the local Shiva shrines, and abhishekam is the rite of the season. Guru Purnima, on the Ashadha full moon, opens the period.
Nothing of commencement is kept, so what a pandit's July looks like is Shravan: Mondays, abhishekam and the kanwar season. A household with a wedding or a house move in mind is looking at November at the earliest.
Ashadha's Rath Yatra at the start of the month is the largest festival of the period, kept on the Puri calendar wherever a Jagannath temple stands, Ranchi's among them.
