What the calendar is doing in June
June is Jyeshtha into Ashadha, and it is the last of the open months. Ashadha ends at Devshayani Ekadashi, when the tradition holds Vishnu to begin his four-month sleep, and with it the season for weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures closes.
So dates in the first part of the month are ordinary and dates after that ekadashi are not available at all for rites of commencement. Families fixing a wedding usually treat Devshayani as a deadline rather than as a preference.
Devshayani Ekadashi is a deadline, and the fortnight before it is the most contested stretch of the first half of the year. A family that misses it waits four months, which is why June bookings are made earlier than any others.
Nirjala Ekadashi, in Jyeshtha, is the strictest of the year's ekadashi fasts — kept without water — and falls in the same fortnight families are using to close their wedding dates.
