What the tradition asks of a Lakshmi Puja date
This one has no choice of date at all. Lakshmi Puja is kept on the Diwali amavasya, in the evening, and every household in a city wants the same window — which makes availability rather than the calendar the thing to plan around. In the older market areas it is booked months ahead.
The house is cleaned and lit before the puja rather than after, because the tradition is that the goddess is received. Trading families keep the Chopda Pujan inside the same rite, opening the new year's account books, which is why the evening carries a financial year as well as a lunar one.
One evening, one window, and every household wanting it — this is the single hardest booking of the year to place late. The older market areas fix theirs months in advance, and a family arranging one in the week before Diwali is choosing from whoever is still free.
