What the tradition asks of a Mundan date
Mundan is kept in the child's first or third year, and the tradition asks for an odd-numbered one. Within that the date is chosen for the child, and the months generally preferred are the open ones — the same stretches that carry the wedding season, rather than Chaturmas or Pitru Paksha.
Families that keep the rite at a particular shrine have a second constraint on top of the calendar: the temple's own season. At Baidyanath, Shravan makes it impractical however good the date.
The rite itself is under two hours and the day around it is usually the larger event, with relatives travelling. Families commonly keep it with another of the first-year rites when they do, which is two sankalps in one sitting rather than one.
