What the calendar is doing in October
October is Ashwin into Kartika, and it opens the moment Pitru Paksha ends: Sharad Navratri begins on the next day, with kalash sthapana on the first morning and Vijayadashami on the tenth. Dussehra is one of the abujh muhurats — auspicious in itself, without calculation — which is why so much is begun on it after a fortnight in which nothing could be.
Karva Chauth and the run-up to Diwali fall in Kartika at the end of the month. Chaturmas has not ended yet, so the wedding season has not reopened; what Vijayadashami opens is purchases, ventures and the smaller beginnings rather than marriage.
The month turns twice: nothing until Pitru Paksha ends, then Navratri, then Vijayadashami, which is used for purchases and ventures the way Akshaya Tritiya is. Weddings still wait for November, and families often mistake Dussehra's openness for the season reopening.
Sharad Purnima, the full moon between Navratri and Diwali, is kept with kheer left out overnight under the moon, and is the last of the month's observances before Kartika opens.
