What the calendar is doing in September
September is Bhadrapada into Ashwin, still inside Chaturmas, and it carries Pitru Paksha — the dark fortnight of Ashwin, sixteen days given to the forefathers. No marriage is fixed in it, no house entered and no new work begun; the fortnight is the strictest closed period in the calendar and the closure is the point of it.
The rites kept in it are tarpan, shraddh and pind daan, on the tithi of a death rather than on a chosen date. Sarva Pitru Amavasya closes the fortnight and carries the rites for anyone whose tithi is unknown.
Pitru Paksha closes the fortnight to everything except the ancestral rites, and in Gaya it takes the town's pandits with it. Elsewhere the closure is a matter of custom rather than availability, and the rites kept are shraddh and tarpan on the tithi.
Anant Chaturdashi, which closes Ganesh Chaturthi with the immersion, usually falls in the days just before the fortnight begins, so the two run back to back.
