Holi is two observances on consecutive days and the first is the older. Holika Dahan is lit on the full-moon evening of Phalguna, a pyre built through the preceding weeks and burned at a muhurat fixed to the ending of the tithi — the story is Prahlada carried into the fire by Holika and surviving it.
The colour comes the next morning, and it is played rather than performed: dry gulal first, then water. The convention that the day suspends rank — that anyone may colour anyone — is the part most often written about, and it holds for the morning rather than the day.
Braj keeps it longest and most elaborately. Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon runs a week before the rest of the country, the women of one village driving off the men of the other with staves; Vrindavan's temples play with flowers, and Mathura with colour from the temple steps.
The names change with the region — Dol Jatra in Bengal, where the image is carried on a swing; Shigmo in Goa; Yaosang in Manipur, kept over five days — and the burning of Holika is common to almost all of them.
