Makar Sankranti is fixed to the sun rather than the moon, which is why it falls on roughly the fourteenth of January every year while every other festival moves. It marks the sun's entry into Capricorn and the start of Uttarayan, its turn northward.
The offering is til and gud — sesame and jaggery, made into laddu and exchanged with the words asking that the sweetness be matched by the speech. The pairing is seasonal before it is symbolic: both are warming, and the festival sits at the coldest point of the north Indian year.
It is kept under different names and with different rites across the country. Pongal in Tamil Nadu boils the new rice until it spills over; Magh Bihu in Assam burns the meji; Lohri in Punjab is the night before; and Gujarat flies kites from dawn, with Uttarayan closing the sky over Ahmedabad for two days.
The Ganga Sagar mela is held at the same point, where the river meets the sea in West Bengal, and the bathing there is second only to the Kumbh in numbers.
