About Jagannath Mandir, Ranchi
The Jagannath temple at Ranchi was built in 1691 by a Nagvanshi king and is a smaller copy of the Puri temple, standing on a hill in Dhurwa. Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are worshipped as at Puri.
Its Rath Yatra is the largest in Jharkhand and follows the Puri calendar, with the chariot drawn to the Mausibari and returning nine days later. The mela that accompanies it fills the ground below the hill for the whole week.
The temple is on a hill in Dhurwa, a short drive from the centre of Ranchi, and the final approach is a stepped path. The week of the Rath Yatra is the one time the surrounding ground is closed to traffic.
