Temples in Gangtok

One temple documented in Gangtok, 1 with a full guide.

Darshan timings and how to reach, for every temple we have written a guide for — plus the pujas families keep near each one. Temples we have documented but not yet written up are listed below by name.

When Gangtok's temples were built

Thakurbari's founding is documented rather than traditional, which makes it the clearest case on this list: it was built in 1935 on land given by the Chogyal of Sikkim for the town's Nepali and Marwari residents. A Buddhist monarch endowing a Hindu temple is the state's own history in one sentence.

The complex holds shrines to several deities rather than one, which is what a temple serving a mixed community in a small town becomes. It is where Gangtok keeps Durga Puja, Ram Navami, Janmashtami and Diwali, and where most of the city's domestic rites are arranged.

The temple directory for Gangtok is being compiled.
