About Budhanath Mandir
Budhanath Mandir stands on the Ganga at Bhagalpur, at the eastern end of the ghats, and the linga worshipped there is held by local tradition to be swayambhu. The temple is one of the oldest continuously used shrines in the town.
Its calendar is the Shaiva one — Shravan Mondays, the monthly Shivratri, and Mahashivratri, when the queue runs along the ghat. The river frontage also makes it a place where asthi visarjan and tarpan are commonly kept.
The temple opens straight onto the ghat, which is why it is used for river rites as much as for darshan. The steps down to the water are steep and are submerged through the monsoon, when the approach shifts to the upper level.
