The Smarta tradition in Gaya
Smarta practice takes its name from the smriti — the remembered texts — and its household form from the pancayatana arrangement attributed to Shankaracharya: five deities on the shrine, Vishnu, Shiva, Devi, Surya and Ganesha, with the family's own chosen one at the centre and no claim that the other four are lesser.
This is why most north Indian household priests can serve a family of any leaning without changing what they do. A Smarta pandit performing a griha pravesh or a shraddha is following the manual the whole region shares, and the family's ishta devata decides which image sits in the middle.
Gaya receives families of every leaning and every region, and the shraddha performed for them is the common smriti one. The tirtha-purohits here work to a manual that does not ask what the household's ishta devata is before it begins.
That is what makes the town workable at all. Several hundred families a day, from a dozen linguistic regions and every sampradaya, are put through the same sequence of tirthas — and the sequence holds because it rests on authorities all of them recognise.
Questions about tradition matching
How is a Smarta pandit different?
Which deity is invoked first, the form of the sankalp, and details of the vidhi. The ritual is the same tradition; the parampara differs.
Does my family need to know its sampradaya?
No. If you are unsure, book by language and tell the pandit what your family has always done — he will follow it where the vidhi allows.
Are Arya Samaj weddings different?
Yes — the vidhi is shorter and the mantras follow the Samaj’s own sanskar vidhi. Pandits listed under it perform that form.
