The fortnight in which Shraddh is traditionally kept for all three generations. Families keep the rite on the tithi matching the day of death; where that is not known, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is the day the tradition provides.

Pitru Paksha in Gaya
Gaya is where the fortnight is kept. Pind daan offered here is held in the tradition to complete what the annual shraddh at home continues — the offering is made to Vishnu on behalf of the forefathers rather than to them directly, which is the doctrinal reason the town carries the weight it does.
The rite is a circuit rather than a sitting. The Falgu, which runs below its own bed for most of the year and is reached by digging into the sand; the Vishnupad temple over the footprint; the Akshayavat; Mangla Gauri on the hill above. Families keeping the full sequence take several days over forty-five vedis; most keep the shortened one in a single day.
For the fortnight the town's tirtha-purohits are committed and its lodgings are full, and Sarva Pitru Amavasya — the last day, which carries the rites for anyone whose tithi is unknown — is the busiest of the sixteen. A domestic booking of any other kind is hard to place in Gaya during it and easy either side.
What the fortnight asks of a family is time rather than money. The pinda material is inexpensive and the pandit's day is not, because the circuit is walked between stations and cannot be fitted around another booking; a family arriving without a date agreed will usually wait. Gaya is also the one place where a shraddh kept once is held to discharge what the annual rite at home continues, which is why so many households travel for it a single time.
