About Pind Daan
Pind daan is the offering of pinda — balls of rice, barley flour and sesame — on behalf of the ancestors, and the tradition holds that it is owed to three generations by name and to the whole line beyond them. It is offered with a sankalp that names the family, the gotra, the place and the person it is for.
It is kept at a tirtha rather than at home, on a riverbank or at a named site, and most often in Pitru Paksha. The rite is unhurried and is walked between stations rather than sat through in one place. Its register is solemn from beginning to end.
Keeping a rite in Gaya
Gaya's ritual year is organised around the ancestral rites, and everything else is arranged in the spaces around them. Through Pitru Paksha the town's pandits are committed for the fortnight and a domestic booking is hard to place; the months either side are open.
The town is also where families arrive rather than live, so a rite here is often kept at a lodging or on the Falgu rather than at a home. Samagri is easy to buy close to Vishnupad and the ghats, which is where most of it is sold.
Pind Daan in Gaya — local custom
Gaya is where pind daan is kept. The rite here is offered to Vishnu on behalf of the forefathers rather than to them directly, which is the doctrinal reason the tradition holds Gaya to complete what other tirthas continue. The full circuit runs over several days and forty-five vedis; most families keep the shortened one at the Falgu, the Vishnupad and the Akshayavat in a single day.
