Ritual geography of Jharkhand
Jharkhand's ritual life sits on two foundations that rarely meet. The older is the Shakta observance of the hill shrines — Deori south of Ranchi among them — which predates the state and is tied to particular sites rather than to a calendar the plains would recognise. The other is Shaiva and is anchored at Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and, in this tradition's reckoning, a Shakti Peetha as well.
Layered over both is the practice the last three generations brought with them. The coalfields, the steel towns and the state capital drew Bengali, Odia, Maithili and Bhojpuri households, and their rites came with them — which is why Ranchi keeps Durga Puja in two forms at once and a Rath Yatra on the Puri calendar.
Shravan organises the whole state. The kanwar walk from Sultanganj to Deoghar takes about a hundred kilometres and a month, and everything else in Jharkhand's ritual year is arranged around it.
