About Durga Kund Temple
Durga Kund, the red-ochre temple beside the tank of the same name in Varanasi, is an eighteenth-century foundation attributed to the Bengali queen Bhabani of Natore. The tank was once connected to the river, and the temple's Nagara shikhara is built of small tiers rising to a single point.
It is a Shakta temple and is busiest through the two Navratris, when the lane outside is a market of offerings. The colour of the building — the whole exterior washed in red ochre — is the first thing anyone remembers about it.
The temple and the tank share a compound, and the whole of it is walkable from the Assi end of the city. Non-Hindu visitors are admitted to the courtyard but not to the sanctum, which is the usual arrangement at Varanasi's older temples.
