About Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple
Sankat Mochan is Varanasi's principal Hanuman temple, founded by Tulsidas in the sixteenth century at the place where tradition says he had his vision. That association is why the Ramcharitmanas is read here as a matter of course.
The temple sits in a grove near the Assi end of the city and is known for its monkeys and its Tuesday crowds. It also hosts the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, a classical music festival held in the temple grounds each spring that runs through the night for several nights together.
The temple is in a walled grove and entry is straightforward outside Tuesdays, when the queue reaches the road. Phones and leather are left outside, and the monkeys the grove is known for are the reason bags are best left in the vehicle.
