About Rudrabhishek
Rudrabhishek is the bathing of the Shiva linga while the Rudram is recited, and the recitation is what distinguishes it from an ordinary abhishekam. The Sri Rudram from the Yajurveda is chanted through the pouring — eleven times over in the full ekadasha form — with water, milk, curd, ghee, honey and water again.
Bilva leaves are laid on the linga through it, offered underside up and in threes. It is kept on Mondays, on the monthly Shivratri, through Shravan, and at Mahashivratri; it is done at a temple more often than at home, because the linga is usually the temple's. Two and a half hours.
Keeping a rite in Varanasi
Varanasi does more ritual per day than any city on this list, and the effect is that everything is available and nothing is quiet. A rite kept on a ghat shares the ghat; one kept at a temple is fitted between the temple's own aartis, which are fixed and do not move for a booking.
The city's own pandits are trained in karmakanda to a depth that is unusual, so a question about why a step is done a particular way tends to get an answer from a named authority. The lanes are the practical constraint: the last stretch to most addresses is walked, and samagri is carried in.
Rudrabhishek in Varanasi — local custom
A rudrabhishek in Kashi is an ordinary booking rather than a special request, and it is kept at a named temple more often than at home — the Vishwanath temple's own sequence is fixed and the smaller Shiva shrines take the rest. The priests who do it have usually done one that morning.
