When Ranchi's temples were built
Ranchi's older temple is the Jagannath temple at Dhurwa, built in 1691 by a Nagvanshi king as a smaller copy of the Puri temple — a deliberate transplant of Odisha's form and calendar onto a Jharkhand hill, and the reason the city's Rath Yatra follows Puri's rather than a local sequence.
Pahari Mandir on Ranchi Hill is a much later shrine on a much older site: the hill was Tiringburu before the temple gave it its present name, and its national associations — the tricolour raised at the summit each Independence Day, in memory of freedom fighters hanged there — date only from 1947.
