Who conducts a rite in Varanasi
Varanasi trains more priests than it uses. Its pathshalas and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University have supplied karmakanda priests to half of north India for generations, and the depth shows in what can be answered rather than in what is recited — a question about why a step is done a particular way gets a named authority.
The city's own emphasis is Shaiva, its household manuals are Smarta, and its ghat priests are specialists in the rites for the dead. Bhojpuri is the street language and Hindi the visitor's; a great many here also work directly in Sanskrit.

The other thing to settle is where: a rite on a ghat, at a temple and at a lodging are three different arrangements, and the temple option is fitted between aartis that do not move.
