Sanskrit is not a translation language here — it is the language the rite is already in. A pandit listed as working in Sanskrit is one who can stop, read the verse he has just said, and tell you what it says word by word.

Families ask for this when they want the paddhati followed visibly rather than summarised: the text open, the sequence read out, and the reason for each step given from the text rather than from memory.

Varanasi has taught Sanskrit continuously for longer than any other city on this list, and its pathshalas and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University still supply the priests of half of north India. Asking for a rite in Sanskrit here is asking for something the city is unusually well set up to give.

The depth shows in what can be answered rather than in what is recited. A Kashi pandit trained in karmakanda can generally say which authority a step comes from and why a neighbouring tradition does it differently, which is a different service from performing the step correctly and is the one families come here for.
