New home pujas in Patna (गृह प्रवेश)
The rituals families keep for this occasion in Patna, and the order they are usually kept in.
4 pujas cover almost every booking for this occasion. Which ones you keep depends on your family's custom.
- Griha Pravesh गृह प्रवेश — the house-warming ceremony performed before moving into a new home
- Vastu Shanti वास्तु शांति — the rite kept for a newly built house before Griha Pravesh
- Satyanarayan Katha सत्यनारायण कथा — the katha of Bhagwan Satyanarayan, traditionally read to give thanks
- Havan हवन — the fire offering, kept on its own or as part of a larger vidhi
Keeping a new home rite in Patna
Patna moves house on a scale the rest of the state does not. The city has absorbed families from every district of Bihar for two generations, and a griha pravesh here is as often a family's first house in the city as its first house at all — which changes what the rite is carrying.
The practical consequences are local and specific. New flats in Bailey Road, Kankarbagh and the Danapur side are handed over in batches, so the good muhurats in an open month are taken early and by several households in the same building at once. The date decides the move rather than the other way round: the house is expected to be empty of furniture for the rite and the family to sleep there that night.
Custom is the thing to settle at the booking rather than the rite. Two households on one landing will differ on which deity is honoured first and what is offered, because their customs come from Saran and from Nalanda and not from Patna — and the pandit is the person who has to hold both. A newly built house takes a Vastu Shanti first; a resold flat does not.
