About Satyanarayan Katha
The Satyanarayan katha is the most commonly kept household puja in north India, and it is a reading rather than a rite of passage. The story is told in five chapters from the Skanda Purana, each one closing with an aarti, and the family sits through all five rather than arriving for a moment of it.
It is kept on a purnima by preference, and at a house-warming, a wedding, a new job or the end of a long journey. The prasad is sinni — wheat flour, sugar and banana — and the tradition asks that it be shared beyond the household. Three hours, at home or at a temple.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
