About Havan
A havan is an offering made into fire, and it is either the whole occasion or the closing part of a larger one. The fire is established in a kund, the deity is invoked, and offerings of ghee, samidha and the havan samagri are made with each mantra, ending in the purnahuti — the final full offering.
It is kept on its own for a new beginning, an anniversary or a vow, and inside a griha pravesh, a vivah or a shanti puja as their fire portion. Ventilation is the one practical constraint: it needs an open space, a courtyard or a balcony, and a flat's kitchen is not one. Two hours.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
