About Navagraha Shanti
The Navagraha Shanti is the puja of the nine planetary deities — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — worshipped in the traditional order with their own grains, cloths, woods and mantras. Each graha has a fixed number of japa and its own samidha for the havan.
It is kept at a birth, before a marriage, at the start of a dasha, and where a family's custom asks for it annually. The tradition describes it as an act of propitiation and nothing on this site will describe it as producing an outcome. Three hours, at home, with a havan as its closing part.
Keeping a rite in Ara
Ara is Bhojpur, and its rites run in Bhojpuri — including the singing, which is the women's part and sets the pace a pandit works to. A rite here has more people in the room and less silence in it than the same rite kept in Mithila.
The town is walkable and most addresses are reached on foot from the main road. Aranya Devi is where the town's temple-mode rites are kept, and Navratri closes the lanes around it for a week.
