When Ara's temples were built
Aranya Devi's antiquity is traditional rather than documented: the town is usually said to take its name from the goddess, and the site is placed in the forest the Pandavas passed through — an association that fixes the shrine in the epic rather than in a century.
The present building is a town temple that has grown inside the old street plan, with the two images in the sanctum worshipped as sisters. Bhojpur's temple fabric is generally like this: continuously used, repeatedly rebuilt, and rarely monumental.
