About Griha Pravesh
Griha pravesh is the rite of entering a house for the first time, and the tradition treats the house as something to be settled rather than simply occupied. The sequence is a Ganesh puja, a Vastu puja addressed to the site itself, a havan, and the boiling of milk in the kitchen until it rises and spills over.
It is kept before the family moves in and before furniture arrives, on a muhurat chosen for the purpose — a date, not a time of convenience. A newly built house takes a Vastu Shanti first; a rented or resold one does not. The whole thing runs two to three hours, and the household is expected to stay in the house the night it is done.
Keeping a rite in Ara
Ara is Bhojpur, and its rites run in Bhojpuri — including the singing, which is the women's part and sets the pace a pandit works to. A rite here has more people in the room and less silence in it than the same rite kept in Mithila.
The town is walkable and most addresses are reached on foot from the main road. Aranya Devi is where the town's temple-mode rites are kept, and Navratri closes the lanes around it for a week.
