About Griha Pravesh
Griha pravesh is the rite of entering a house for the first time, and the tradition treats the house as something to be settled rather than simply occupied. The sequence is a Ganesh puja, a Vastu puja addressed to the site itself, a havan, and the boiling of milk in the kitchen until it rises and spills over.
It is kept before the family moves in and before furniture arrives, on a muhurat chosen for the purpose — a date, not a time of convenience. A newly built house takes a Vastu Shanti first; a rented or resold one does not. The whole thing runs two to three hours, and the household is expected to stay in the house the night it is done.
Keeping a rite in Prayagraj
Prayagraj's rites are the Sangam's. Tarpan, asthi visarjan, shraddh and the mundan kept at the confluence are what the city's pandits do most, and the sands where they are done exist for part of the year and are under water for the rest.
Magh is the busy month — the annual mela, and the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh at their own intervals — when the whole city is arranged around the mela ground. Domestic rites in the civil lines and the older town go on regardless, and are unaffected by any of it.
