When Prayagraj's temples were built
Prayagraj's oldest sacred object is a tree and its oldest structure is a fort. The Akshayavat — the undying banyan — is described in accounts of the confluence going back two thousand years and now stands inside the fort Akbar built in 1583, which is why access to it has been a matter of military permission for most of the modern period.
Bade Hanuman at Daraganj is the town's distinctive temple: the image lies rather than stands and the sanctum is below ground, a form with no other well-known example in north India. The Ganga reaches it each flood, and the tradition treats that as the river's own darshan rather than as damage.
