About Pind Daan
Pind daan is the offering of pinda — balls of rice, barley flour and sesame — on behalf of the ancestors, and the tradition holds that it is owed to three generations by name and to the whole line beyond them. It is offered with a sankalp that names the family, the gotra, the place and the person it is for.
It is kept at a tirtha rather than at home, on a riverbank or at a named site, and most often in Pitru Paksha. The rite is unhurried and is walked between stations rather than sat through in one place. Its register is solemn from beginning to end.
Keeping a rite in Prayagraj
Prayagraj's rites are the Sangam's. Tarpan, asthi visarjan, shraddh and the mundan kept at the confluence are what the city's pandits do most, and the sands where they are done exist for part of the year and are under water for the rest.
Magh is the busy month — the annual mela, and the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh at their own intervals — when the whole city is arranged around the mela ground. Domestic rites in the civil lines and the older town go on regardless, and are unaffected by any of it.
Pind Daan in Prayagraj — local custom
Prayagraj's pind daan is kept on the sands at the Sangam and at the Akshayavat inside the fort, and it is commonly the first station of a journey that ends at Gaya. Families travelling the circuit usually keep it here in Magh and complete it at Gaya in Pitru Paksha.
