When Varanasi's temples were built
Almost nothing in Kashi is as old as Kashi. The Vishwanath temple has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly; the present one dates to 1780 and Ahilyabai Holkar, with the gold on its spires given by Ranjit Singh in 1835. Durga Kund is eighteenth-century and is attributed to the Bengali queen Bhabani of Natore; Sankat Mochan goes back to Tulsidas in the sixteenth century.
The pattern is one of patronage from outside the city — Maratha, Sikh, Bengali — rebuilding a site the city itself never abandoned. The Corridor completed in 2021 is the most recent instance of the same thing, and the ghats, which are the city's real fabric, were built in that same eighteenth-century wave.
