About Lakshmi Puja
Lakshmi Puja is kept on the Diwali amavasya, in the evening rather than the morning, and Ganesha is worshipped beside Lakshmi rather than after her. The house is cleaned and lit before the puja, not after: the tradition is that she is received, and a house is made ready for a guest before they arrive.
Trading families open the new year's account books in the same rite — the Chopda Pujan — which is why the puja marks a financial year as well as a lunar one. Coins, a kalash, lotus, kheel and batasha are the usual offerings. An hour and a half, at home, at a muhurat that falls in the evening.
Keeping a rite in Bhagalpur
Bhagalpur is a river town and its rites use the river. Tarpan, asthi visarjan and the shraddh rites are kept on the ghats below Budhanath rather than at home, and the monsoon changes which steps are usable rather than whether the rite happens.
The town's own tradition is Anga's, and the calendar it keeps around Shravan and Mahashivratri is the Shaiva one. Silk-weaving households in Champanagar and Nathnagar hold their own occasions, which is worth mentioning when a date is being fixed.
