When Bhagalpur's temples were built
Budhanath stands at the eastern end of the Bhagalpur ghats and its linga is held by local tradition to be swayambhu — self-manifested, and therefore without a foundation date at all. It is among the oldest continuously used shrines in the town, and the temple and the river steps are effectively one site.
Bhagalpur was the capital of Anga, and the district's older material is scattered rather than concentrated: Mandar Hill an hour south carries its own Puranic association, and the silk-weaving quarters at Champanagar and Nathnagar hold their own shrines and their own occasions.
