Temples in Gaya (गया)

4 temples documented in Gaya, 3 with full guides.

Darshan timings and how to reach, for every temple we have written a guide for — plus the pujas families keep near each one. Temples we have documented but not yet written up are listed below by name.

When Gaya's temples were built

Gaya's principal temple is dated precisely, which is unusual: Vishnupad was rebuilt in 1787 by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, the Maratha queen who rebuilt Kashi Vishwanath seven years earlier and endowed temples across northern India. The octagonal sanctum and the shikhara over it are hers; the footprint they enclose is what the site was always for.

Mangla Gauri on the hill is older in fabric — inscriptions there have been read as fifteenth-century, over something earlier — and the Akshayavat and the Falgu ghats are not buildings at all. Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi temple, eleven kilometres away, is the oldest structure in the district by centuries and belongs to another tradition entirely.
