About Shraddh
Shraddh is the annual rite for a parent or forebear, kept on the tithi of the death rather than on its calendar date — so it moves through the year. Pinda of rice and barley are offered, water with black sesame is given as tarpan, and a meal is offered to a brahmin, a cow or a crow according to the family's custom.
It is kept by the son or the person who performed the last rites, at home or on a riverbank, and it is preceded by a fast until the offering is made. During Pitru Paksha the same rite is kept for the whole line rather than one person. Two hours, in a quiet register throughout — there is no aarti and no celebration in it.
Keeping a rite in Varanasi
Varanasi does more ritual per day than any city on this list, and the effect is that everything is available and nothing is quiet. A rite kept on a ghat shares the ghat; one kept at a temple is fitted between the temple's own aartis, which are fixed and do not move for a booking.
The city's own pandits are trained in karmakanda to a depth that is unusual, so a question about why a step is done a particular way tends to get an answer from a named authority. The lanes are the practical constraint: the last stretch to most addresses is walked, and samagri is carried in.
Shraddh in Varanasi — local custom
Varanasi keeps shraddh on the ghats through the year, and the Pishach Mochan tank in the city is where the rites for a death held to be untimely or unquiet are traditionally performed. Both are the city's own specialisms and neither is arranged at short notice in Pitru Paksha.
