About Vivah
A Hindu marriage is a sequence of rites over a day rather than a single ceremony. The pandit's part runs from the mandap puja and the Ganesh sthapana through the kanyadaan, the panigrahan, the laja homa into the fire, and the saptapadi — the seven steps, which is the point at which the marriage is complete in the tradition.
What surrounds it varies by region and by family: the haldi, the mehndi, the baraat's reception, the jaimala. The pandit is booked for the muhurat, which is calculated for the couple and frequently falls late at night, and the rite runs three to four hours from the mandap puja to the vidaai.
Keeping a rite in Rajgir
Rajgir is a pilgrimage town for three traditions at once and a small residential one underneath. Rites for visitors are kept at the kunds and at the hill shrines; rites for the town's own households are kept at home, in Magahi, on the Magadh calendar.
The hot springs are the town's ritual centre, and bathing there is a step in a rite rather than an amenity. The Malamas fair in the intercalary month is the one period when the site is too full to plan anything around.
