About Griha Pravesh
Griha pravesh is the rite of entering a house for the first time, and the tradition treats the house as something to be settled rather than simply occupied. The sequence is a Ganesh puja, a Vastu puja addressed to the site itself, a havan, and the boiling of milk in the kitchen until it rises and spills over.
It is kept before the family moves in and before furniture arrives, on a muhurat chosen for the purpose — a date, not a time of convenience. A newly built house takes a Vastu Shanti first; a rented or resold one does not. The whole thing runs two to three hours, and the household is expected to stay in the house the night it is done.
Keeping a rite in Rajgir
Rajgir is a pilgrimage town for three traditions at once and a small residential one underneath. Rites for visitors are kept at the kunds and at the hill shrines; rites for the town's own households are kept at home, in Magahi, on the Magadh calendar.
The hot springs are the town's ritual centre, and bathing there is a step in a rite rather than an amenity. The Malamas fair in the intercalary month is the one period when the site is too full to plan anything around.
