When Rajgir's temples were built
Rajgir's sacred sites are older than temple architecture in this region. The hot springs on Vaibhava hill are described in the Mahabharata and in the Buddhist canon alike, and what stands over them — stone spouts, tanks, a Shiva shrine beside them — is a much later frame around a much older use.
The valley's built heritage belongs to three traditions at once and to different centuries: the cyclopean walls of Rajagriha, the Buddhist sites on Gridhrakuta, and the Jain temples that crown almost every peak around the town.
