The Shaiva tradition in Varanasi
Shaiva practice holds Shiva as supreme and works mostly through the linga rather than an anthropomorphic image. Its central rite is the abhishekam — water, milk, curd, ghee, honey and water again, poured in sequence — with bilva leaves, ash and datura where another tradition would bring flowers and sweets.
The marks are the tripundra, three horizontal lines of bhasma, and rudraksha. A Shaiva pandit will usually carry the Rudram, and a household that asks for a rudrabhishek is asking for the eleven-fold recitation that goes with it.
Kashi is Shiva's city in the tradition's own account of itself, and the Vishwanath temple sets the pattern the rest of it follows. A rudrabhishek here is an ordinary booking rather than a special request, and the priests who do it have usually done it that morning as well.
The city also keeps the rites at the other end of a life. Shiva is invoked at the cremation ground here as much as at the temple, and a Kashi Shaiva pandit is as likely to be asked for an asthi visarjan or a tarpan as for an abhishekam.
Questions about tradition matching
How is a Shaiva pandit different?
Which deity is invoked first, the form of the sankalp, and details of the vidhi. The ritual is the same tradition; the parampara differs.
Does my family need to know its sampradaya?
No. If you are unsure, book by language and tell the pandit what your family has always done — he will follow it where the vidhi allows.
Are Arya Samaj weddings different?
Yes — the vidhi is shorter and the mantras follow the Samaj’s own sanskar vidhi. Pandits listed under it perform that form.
