About Asthi Visarjan
Asthi visarjan is the immersion of the ashes, kept after the cremation and usually within a few days, though the tradition allows longer where the family must travel. The remains are washed with milk, Ganga water and the panchagavya before the sankalp is read and they are given to the river.
It is done at a tirtha on flowing water, and the same visit generally carries a tarpan and the first of the shraddh rites. An hour and a half, and it is a rite the family arrives at rather than hosts — there is nothing to prepare at home and nothing to offer afterwards.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
