Magahi in Patna

Magahi is the speech of the old Magadh country — the districts around Patna, Gaya, Nalanda and Jehanabad. It is spoken far more than it is written, and a family that uses it at home will often have had every ritual of their lives explained to them in it and never seen a word of it on paper.

That matters most at a rite nobody wants to ask twice about. The instructions at a shraddha are precise and are given once; heard in the language the household actually thinks in, they do not have to be repeated.

Magahi is the speech of Patna's southern hinterland — Masaurhi, Fatuha, Bihta and the villages beyond them — and of a great many families now inside the city. It is rarely written and almost never printed, so a rite conducted in it is conducted entirely from the pandit's own reading.

Households that use it often describe their customs as their village's rather than their region's, and that is roughly accurate: the sequence changes from one tract of Magadh to the next. A pandit who speaks Magahi is usually also one who knows which tract a family is from and what that changes.
