When Patna's temples were built
Patna's temples are almost all rebuildings. The city has been Pataliputra, Azimabad and Patna in turn, and the floods, the sieges and the rebuildings of two thousand years have left very little standing that is old — Mahavir Mandir's present building is from the 1980s over a much older shrine, and the Patan Devi temples sit in lanes that predate the modern street plan but in fabric that does not.
What is genuinely old here is the siting rather than the stone: the shrines are where they are because they have always been there, and the buildings around them are the most recent of many. The exception is the newest — the ISKCON temple on Buddha Marg, opened in 2019, which is the only major temple in the city built to a single design in one campaign.
